The Steamboat Thor

Ångaren Thor vid Kronobergs slottsruin

In summertime, lake Helgasjön is served by the fantastic steamboat Thor. Welcome to enjoy a ride on board and go through the locks at Sweden’s southernmost lock in Åby.

The steamboat Thor was built in 1887 at Bergsund’s Mechanical Workshop in Stockholm, and the same year that Thor was built, Sweden’s southernmost lock at Åby was also completed.

We offer lock tours, Helgasjö tours and storytelling tours (guided in swedish). You can also hire the steamboat Thor for various tours. All tours depart from Kronoberg’s castle ruins, which is also Thor’s home port.

Get tickets to The Steamboat Thor

The steamboat Thor operates on lake Helgasjön from May to August. Tickets are available from April. Tickets can be bought at Smålands museum during regular opening hours or digitally via Kulturparken Smålands ticket kiosk.

Good to know

Animals are not allowed

Due to the risk of allergies, we do not allow pet animals on the boat. Guide dogs are the exception.

Pram on the steamer Thor

Strollers or prams are not allowed on board the steamer Thor. We therefore recommend that they are left in the car. If that is not possible, there are 1-2 pram spaces in the shed which is adjacent to the steamer Thor. We cannot guarantee a place there as it is first come, first served.

Thor’s staff will help to see if there is room for the pram in the shed.

Life jackets on Thor

The steamer Thor only provides life jackets in case of emergency. We recommend that you bring your own life jackets to minors who will be traveling with Thor.

Food on the steamer Thor

You can bring your own snack on the steamer Thor. You can also book a coffee basket from the nearby located Ryttmästaregården in advance.

Photograph or film on The Steamboat Thor

You can photograph and film without a tripod on The Steamboat Thor.

Visiting address

The Steamboat Thor is located at Kronoberg’s castle ruins, about 8 kilometers outside the center of Växjö. Kronoberg’s castle ruins are well signposted, and parking spaces are available.
